Smalling needs a little time

Ex-Reds defender Gary Pallister has been impressed by the glimpses of new signing Chris Smalling but says that the defender must be given time to adjust to life at United before his ability is properly judged.

Smalling, who is now on England Under-21 international duty for their games against Portugal and Lithuania, made his home debut for the Reds as a second-half substitute against West Ham at the weekend.

"On the pre season tour of America I thought he looked strong, quick and good on the ball," said Pally. “But it is still hard to judge at this early stage.

"Players sometimes come to Old Trafford and go into their shell as they are overawed by the expectation. But I'm confident that he has what it takes to make it here."

Gary acknowledges that Smalling has a long way to go before reaching the level of performance achieved week in, week out by the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

But he says that going off first instincts, the Reds may have found a diamond in the rough. "We have seen him play regularly at Fulham and he doesn’t look daunted by the Premier League. So hopefully when he is given a good run in the side he will prove that the manager has still got a good eye for a top-class defender!"

Tom Cleverley - Wigan then United!

“Having tested myself in Division One and the Championship, I felt ready to give the Premier League a go. My aim is to prove myself at this level and then hopefully next season it could be the Champions League with United! I needed the week-to-week test of the Premier League if my game was going to keep on the up. I wanted to keep going up a level. Hopefully, I will be able to show at Wigan that I can get on the ball comfortably in the Premier League and score goals as well. I am confident in my ability and I want everyone to see it. If I do well at Wigan then in 12 months my confidence will be sky high and I will be better equipped to tackle the challenge at United."

“This was the right next step for me. Sir Alex Ferguson had said he wanted to keep me but looking at the size of United’s squad and the quality of the midfielders, I worried I might not get many chances. I have been out on loan for two seasons and they have been good for me and my improvement. I didn’t want that progress to be hindered. So with all due respects to the reserves, I didn’t want to go back to that level. I went to see the manager last week and had a chat and we both came to the agreement that it would be best to go out on loan. Wigan suits me down to the ground. I don’t know the manager Roberto Martinez but I’ve heard good things about him. I know he likes to play football and you can see that the way Wigan play. That’s exactly the type of side I need. I can still stay at home so it is perfect. There are a lot of quality players at Wigan so I will be learning. I would have loved to have stayed at United but I had to be realistic. This is the best approach. I know there might be some regrets if suddenly there is a spate of injuries in United’s midfield but you cannot afford to think that way.”

Owen Hargreaves Named In Manchester United 25-Man Premier League Squad

Injury-plagued midfielder Owen Hargreaves is one of the 23 senior players named in Manchester United's 25-man Premier League matchday squad.

The new regulations state that for the 2010-11 season, teams must register a maximum of 17 'non homegrown' and minimum of eight 'homegrown players'. The homegrown players - such as Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand - are those trained for three years by any English or Welsh club before the age of 21.

Once the list is named, no changes can be made until the close of the transfer window. Anyone outside the 25 over the age of 21 cannot be selected and would be forced to stay on the sidelines unless they repeat Craig Bellamy's loan to a Football League side.

Clubs can, however, use an unlimited number of players aged 21 or under regardless of nationality. This law allows manager Sir Alex Ferguson to call on un-named youth stars Fabio, Rafael, Bebe, Corry Evans, Chris Smalling, Gabriel Obertan, Ritchie De Laet, Ben Amos and Federico Macheda.
