Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney Backs Premier League's Home Grown Quota
Quota system is 'vital' to England's future...

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has stated his support for the "home grown" quota system that is set to be enforced in the new Premier League season.

The rule means that eight players from a squad of twenty five must have been trained in England or Wales, with clubs allowed an unlimited number of under-21 players.

Rooney believes that this system will prove invaluable to both the Premier League and the national team.

"I think the new home-grown rules coming in are important,” Rooney told the Premier League Season Review.

"As an academy graduate myself I like to see young players coming through because I think they're vital for the future of England and the Premier League.

"I also think it's important for clubs to have a bunch of home-grown players because they are the lads who know their history.

"For me it's a welcome ruling because it will make the league a bit more interesting, especially in the transfer market."

Rooney added that he believes that the Premier League is becoming more and more difficult to win, with teams having to select their strongest line-ups in every game, United losing out to Chelsea by one point last season.

"Since I signed for United I think the Premier League has got progressively harder to win.

"I know it's a cliche but there are no easy games in the Premier League. In previous seasons you might have had straightforward games where the top clubs could afford to rest players, but that's not the case anymore. Nowadays it's hard to leave players out because every game is competitive and difficult.

"The 2009-10 season was certainly the most competitive I've played in. Over the last three or four years it might have been predictable as the season has gone on who's going to win the league, but this year it was a lot more exciting.

"Many of the top teams lost more games than you probably would expect. It was very tight at the end of the season; we only lost the league by one point."

Serbian is still smarting from the Red Devils' narrow title defeat last term

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic insists that the Red Devils are looking to avenge their narrow defeat to Chelsea in last season’s Premier League title race.

The Serbia international, who recently committed his future to United, was a part of the team that missed out of the club’s fourth consecutive Premier League title last term, falling just one point short of Chelsea.

Ahead of their match-up against the Blues in the Community Shield on Sunday, Vidic is adamant that United are desparate to regain the Premier League title this season.

"It hurt to lose the title last year, especially as it was very close," Vidic told Sky Sports.

"We finished just one point behind Chelsea and were very disappointed we didn't make it.

"But this is a new season, we have to forget what happened last year, and the three before that, if I am truthful.

"Our targets do not change. We have to win the league again and now we are stronger."

Vidic thinks that having more defensive options, like summer signing Chris Smalling, will help the Red Devils’ chase for a record 19th league title.

"There are more players to choose from now.

"Last year we had injuries and, for a period, a few midfield players had to come into the defence, which is not good.

"Now we have a lot of options in each position which is important because we are looking to win all the trophies this season."

Confident Nani Ready To Become 'The Player Everyone Expected' At Manchester United
Winger hopes Hernandez can do well in the Community Shield...

Portuguese winger Nani is overjoyed with the way his career has turned around his career at Manchester United.

It was barely seven months ago, in January, that the winger was believed to have been close to the exit door at Old Trafford, having been unable to measure up to expectations. However, the 23-year-old went on to hit a rich vein of form towards the closing stages of the season and managed to become a key player in the Red Devils line-up.

Now, as the fight for the Community Shield with Chelsea looms large - with the start of the Premier League also swiftly approaching - the Portuguese winger insists that he is delighted with his progress.

"I feel more confident in this club," Nani told reporters.

"I realise where I am and I know I am doing well. I am helping my team win games and important points and now I know I am very important for my team.

"Everyone is excited with me because they didn't know if I could be the player everyone expected. Now everyone starts to believe I can be a very good player."

However, despite the adulation received for his performances last term, the former Sporting midfielder is targeting further improvement.

"Hopefully I can do much better than last season," he said.

"I am working very hard on that and I am confident. People saw a different player last season because I worked hard every day.

"I improved a lot but there is a lot to learn yet and I hope to start this season better than the last."

The Portugal international - who missed the World Cup owing to injury - also gave new arrival Javier Hernandez a pat on the back for the start he has had to his career at United.

The 22-year-old forward has been putting in largely positive performances in pre-season, and has already found the back of the net while playing for his new club.

""Javier is a very good player," said Nani.

"He has shown everyone he can score goals, which is good for us.

"Hopefully he can continue on Sunday because while it is important to win every game, it is always special to beat Chelsea and would be the perfect way to start the new season."

Boss: Cleverley must stay

Tom Cleverley will remain with United this season because Sir Alex Ferguson says he is so talented that the Reds cannot afford to let him join another club on loan.

Cleverley impressed on loan last season with Watford and, although he has been considered to have a promising future at Old Trafford, Sir Alex was at one point mulling over sending him on loan to a Premier League club.

But Cleverley, who turns 21 next week, did himself a lot of favours with his performances on the summer tour across North America.

“He is an exceptional young player in terms of his ability to play a variety of positions,” Sir Alex said on Friday. “He is such a talent, we must keep him. He showed at Watford that he’s a goalscorer from midfield and we need that. He has outstanding qualities.”

The manager’s words are a major boost for Tom, whose burgeoning young career is really starting to take shape at Old Trafford.

However, Sir Alex has confirmed that two of his young strikers will be going out on loan this season to gain first-team experience. Danny Welbeck and Mame Diouf looks set to join Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers respectively.
