Vidic agrees new deal
United chief executive David Gill has confirmed the club have agreed terms to extend Nemanja Vidic's contract.

Speaking exclusively to MUTV's Stewart Gardner, Gill said: "There was a lot of speculation about Nemanja's future, but in my view it's been the media drumming some old stories because they certainly didn't come out of the Manchester United camp and I'm confident they didn't come out of Nemanja's camp.

"We sat down with Nemanja and his advisor at the end of last season and started discussions. They broke up when Nemanja went away to the World Cup, but resumed when Serbia were knocked out and I'm very pleased to confirm that we agreed terms with Nemanja three or four weeks ago on a new long-term deal with the club.

"It's yet to be signed - the paperwork is now being sorted by our lawyers and being checked by Nemanja's advisors. He's still away on holiday but the plan is that when he gets back the papers will be signed. We've shaken hands on it and we're confident it will all be signed and sealed in early August.

"It's great news for Manchester United and great news for Nemanja and the fans."

Strudwick switches focus

United fitness coach Tony Strudwick has returned to Manchester so he can begin preparations for his work with the players returning to training next week following their exertions at the World Cup.

Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Ji-sung Park have all been holiday since their respective campaigns came to an end in South Africa last month.

While new signing Javier Hernandez, who represented Mexico at the Finals, will join up with his new team-mates on tour in Houston, the others will return to Carrington on Wednesday where Strudwick will be on hand to help with their preparations for the new season.

"Even though they’re coming back later than the other players, they’ve had less time off because of the World Cup so they should be less deconditioned than some of the others," Tony told ManUtd.com.

"First and foremost we’ll see where they’re at fitness wise and look at the different kinds of accelerated programmes we can put them on to try and get them as match-ready as possible for the opening game of the season.

"It’ll be tough, but they’re experienced players who look after themselves well. They'll have to get up to speed pretty quickly so we’ll have to push them quite hard, but I’m sure the lads will all have the bit between their teeth and will be raring to go."

In Tony's absence on tour, his trusted colleagues Gary Walker and Richard Hawkins will continue to manage the squad's fitness programme.

"Gary and Richard will liaise with the manager, Mick and Rene to ensure the pre-season preparations continue as well as they have been doing," adds Tony. "We’ve made good progress in the last week and taken the guys onto another level training wise, introducing different elements of the programme with regard to speed endurance.

"We’re really happy with the number of sessions the guys have done and getting some minutes on the clock in the two games we've played has been great. As a group everyone is at the point they need to be so we're pleased."
