LONDON - Arsenal make up in strength of character what they lack in age and experience, manager Arsene Wenger said on Friday ahead of his team's League Cup final against Birmingham City at Wembley.

Wenger, who has built a succession of successful teams since becoming Arsenal manager 14 years ago, believes his current line-up is capable of ending nearly six years without a trophy on Sunday.
Although Arsenal will be without injured captain Cesc Fabregas and in-form winger Theo Walcott for the final after both were injured against Stoke City on Wednesday, Wenger remained upbeat as they seek their first trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2005.
Arsenal have their eye on four trophies this season and are targeting the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Premier League as well as the League Cup.
"Cesc is sad and disappointed of course, but it could have been worse, the injury is a very small one," Wenger said.
"We have so many targets in front of us, it is important that he is not out for longer," he told reporters at his pre-match press conference before the final.
"We can deal with the fact that Cesc will not be there, Walcott will not be there and, of course, (Thomas) Vermaelen will not be there.
"When you look at the squad we have and the number of players we have available, we have enough quality players to deal with that. We have belief, confidence and are committed," Wenger added.
"We have a good bond, a good confidence level and are highly determined to do well on all fronts.
"This team is a young team. They have the advantage of a team that has grown together.
"What is important is not what happened in the last five years, but what we can do now. Victory at Wembley can help us to have more confidence for the other trophies that we go for."
However, he will not be taking the threat of Birmingham lightly.
"Birmingham are a team I respect a lot because they have always consistent behaviour in their motivational level," he said.
"They have stabilised the club in the Premier League and they are now in the Carling Cup Final. We will face a Birmingham team that is highly determined to do well. We expect them to be at their best and that means a big performance from our side will be required."
Wenger said that Robin van Persie will captain the side in Fabregas's absence and that Walcott was a major doubt for the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie at Barcelona on March 8.
"He will be out for two to three weeks with an ankle problem. I would say it is very unlikely he will be fit for the game," he added.

Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas ­discovered he had been ruled out of the Carling Cup final by reading the club’s official website.

Despite suffering a hamstring injury in midweek against Stoke, Fabregas was determined to play this weekend until he read the news on the web.

Mirror Football claims that gaffer Arsene Wenger did not tell his captain personally as he was at a board meeting on Thursday before releasing an injury update that night.

Wenger revealed: “He’s disappointed, but his disappointment is diminished by the fact we have other main targets after this game – the championship, the Champions League, the FA Cup.

“If he plays he could make it much worse and be out for three, four, five weeks maybe.”

Dutch striker Robin van Persie is set to lead the Gunners out at Wembley on Sunday.

Former Arsenal frontman Jérémie Aliadière has been granted permission to use the club’s training facilities as the free agent continues his search for a new club.

Aliadière, 27, was linked with moves to Newcastle and Blackpool following his release by Middlesbrough last summer, but neither transfer failed to materialise.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was approached by Aliadière’s agent Thomas Brookes last week in a bid to train at the Gunners’ Colney-based centre. Wenger, who has previously let David Beckham and Thierry Henry train with the club for the same reason, told Brookes that Aliadière would be welcome to train with his former side.

Injury-prone Aliadiere made 29 appearances for Arsenal during his time in North London, scoring one Premier League goal.

Bacary Sagna insists Arsenal have come of age and are not scared of taking the next step to deliver some long overdue success in the Carling Cup final against Birmingham at Wembley on Sunday.

The Gunners have failed to add any silverware to the Emirates Stadium trophy cabinet since moving from Highbury in 2006, the season when they reached the Champions League final. But Sagna feels Sunday provides the perfect opportunity for Arsene Wenger's squad to put previous near misses firmly behind them.

"We have not won anything for six years so it will be massive for the players, the fans and the club as well," the full-back said.

"Every year we have been really disappointed and it is hard to start the season knowing you could have won something in the past.

"But we have grown up as a team, we are wiser and now in the final. It has taken time, but we are on a good way to being successful. We have been close to winning something but we got scared, we stopped playing and were waiting for the result to happen.

"This is not the good way, you have to look forwards and to act. I hope Sunday will be a good way to show people we can win and go on to even more, to show we are very hungry."

Sagna believes Arsenal are now more mature for those disappointments and ready to respond with a memorable victory at Wembley.

"We were scared, but we are not any more," he said. "During the past we have been a bit unlucky as well with injuries and had problems to deal with that. But we have learned from our mistakes and all the problems we had, now we are ready to win everything.

"This progression has come naturally because as a professional you always want to win something and be successful. Unfortunately, we have been so close to winning something but we didn't.

"Now we have the opportunity to win on Sunday, but it will not be easy because Birmingham want it as much as we do. Wembley is one of the most amazing stadiums in Europe and now we have the opportunity to show what we can do, that we can win trophies."

Cesc Fabregas has admitted that the fixture list is just so congested at the moment, that Arsenal simply won’t have time to celebrate the Carling Cup (if they win it) and they just need to focus on the next game.

He said in the Sun: “Arsene Wenger treats every game the same whether we are playing Birmingham or Barcelona. And I really hope to be fit for the second one!

“The games are coming so fast at the moment – almost every three days, which means hardly any time to relax or to see our friends and families. We are spending a lot of time in hotels. After tomorrow we play Leyton Orient in the FA Cup and then Barcelona next week.

“It means even if we beat Birmingham there is no time to celebrate. If the boss orders training on Monday, so be it.

Samir Nasri has agreed a lucrative five-year deal with the Arsenal, according to a report in this morning's Sun. The paper says the French ace has penned the new contract on the eve of the Carling Cup final showdown with Brum at Wembley tomorrow.

Nasri has been a star for us this season and has grabbed 14 goals in 33 games as well as delivering some dazzling displays and plenty of assists. He has helped us fight the fight on four fronts and we enter a crucial period in our quest for glory with him just returning from being sidelined with injury.

According to paper, he has been rewarded with a whopping £100,000 a week deal that will keep him at the club until 2016. Nasri joined us from French side Marseille for a fee of £12.5 million back in 2008.

At the age of 19, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is enjoying what any professional football player would dream of at such a young age as he declared he is ready for Sunday’s League Cup Final against Birmingham City.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online ahead of the game, the Englishman confessed tomorrow’s game is massive as a win would give the players the confidence they need to fight for their other objectives. SIR ALEX FERGUSON reckons the title race has come down to a straight fight between bitter rivals Manchester United and Arsenal.


Old enemies Manchester United and Arsenal find themselves clear at the top of the table, with United one point ahead with a game in hand.

They have still to meet at the Emirates, when United travel to London for what could still be a title decider on May 1.

Fergie is convinced the championship is destined for Old Trafford or the Emirates.

United travel to Wigan today and Fergie believes Tottenham, Chelsea and neighbours Manchester City have left themselves too much ground to make up.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has defended the potential signing of Barcelona wonderkid Jon Miquel Toral Harper.

Barca president Sandro Rosell branded Arsenal’s swoop as ‘immoral’ this week, with he 16-year-old midfielder all but completing his deal to join the North London club.

Wenger said: “You forget that this boy is English. He has an English passport, his mother is English, and hopefully he will join us in the summer.

“We have done what is legal. I love Barcelona, I love Catalonia.
