И качество нашей игры мы подтвердили сегодня, создав множество отличных моментов, и сыграв действительно здорово. Хочу отметить нашу игру в защите, очень важно, что мы не пропустили, так как в матче с "Ньюкаслом" нам забили целых четыре мяча. Arsene Wenger saw his team play a magnificent game against Wolves yesterday to keep them in the hunt for the Premiership title, and he thinks that Asenal are now ready to face “the best team in the world”.

Robin Van Persie scored twice but ended up with an ice-pack on his leg, but Wenger believes he will be fit for Wednesday.

Wenger said: “We played an outstanding game with the number of chances we created and the quality of our game. We were defensively solid which was important after conceding four goals last week. The only regret is we did not score enough goals, but that is down to their goalkeeper.

“We play the best team in the world next so it is important to go into the game with confidence and in a strong position in the League. We are in the League race and believe we can do it. We have the hunger. We could focus on today and not have Barcelona on our minds.”

“We are not favourites, but we can do it.”

After Barcelona only managed a 1-1 draw against lowly Sporting Gijon yesterday, perhaps Arsenal will have the edge in confidence….

Chelsea have identified Arsenal’s chief scout Steve Rowley as their top target to replace technical director Frank Arnesen.

Roman Abramovich means business. His personal involvement in the recruitment of Fernando Torres and David Luiz was evidence of a renewed commitment to Chelsea on the part of its Russian owner

From the outside the investment of £75 million in two players as the club was announcing £70.9 million losses in their annual accounts appeared a breathtaking contradiction to the club’s previous pronouncements about trying to break even. It seemed a careless defiance of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules, which begin to come in to effect from next season.

There is method to all this, though. Chelsea are rebooting.

In Torres and Luiz they have made a short-term investment to ensure they remain competitive on the pitch while the club undergoes radical reform behind the scenes.

Frank Arnesen, the technical director, is leaving at the end of the season and Chelsea are looking at fresh ways of attracting the best in the world to Cobham. Initially, the club had considered replacing Arnesen with another technical director and, taking into account Abramovich’s admiration for Barcelona, club officials met the Catalan club’s former technical director Txiki Begiristain, before deciding to change the system.

They have switched targets from Barcelona to Arsenal and are ready to offer chief scout Steve Rowley a substantial financial package to run their scouting network and identify the best emerging talent.

Abramovich wants a new guru and Rowley, with his incredible track record at Arsenal fits the bill.

Rowley, though, would not be direct replacement for Arnesen, as his responsibilities would be limited to finding talent. Arnesen’s other responsibilities as technical director are expected to be divided up, with Neil Bath looking after the academy and Mike Forde, the highly-rated performance director, taking on more responsibility.

Arnesen staked his reputation on getting academy players into the first team and, at the end of last season, five of those young recruits were expected to be elevated to first team-consideration.

Four of those five — Fabio Borini, Gaël Kakuta, Patrick van Aanholt and Danny Sturridge — have been sent out on loan while the fifth, Jeffrey Bruma, is expected to join Leicester on loan this week. While all still have the chance to make it at Chelsea, it has become clear that they were not ready for the Chelsea XI.

There is also concern at executive level about the amount being paid in compensation in recruitment of young players and also the damage being done to the club’s reputation by the way certain deals have been handled.

After the controversy surrounding the signing of Kakuta last season, Chelsea are again being criticised for an approach to an under-age player. Nathan Ake, who turns 16 this week, is to join Chelsea after they agreed compensation with Feyenoord.

In Holland it has been reported that the compensation could be as much as €800,000, a figure those reports say are inflated by the fact that Ake posted pictures of a visit to Cobham on his Facebook page when, as he is still 15, he should not have been approached by another club and certainly not represented by an agent.

Chelsea insist that “they have done everything by the book and kept Feyenoord abreast of our interest at every stage”. Feyenoord are not making a complaint but the transfer has sparked questions in the Dutch parliament and the Dutch FA has submitted a dossier on the deal to the sports minister.

Wil van Megen, an Amsterdam-based lawyer for players union FIFPro, said: “The way the club and the agent have operated in this particular case is condemnable and blameworthy.”

As Chelsea have agreed terms with Feyenoord, there is no suggestion that they will face any sanction, but paying substantial fees in compensation for teenagers is something Chelsea want to reduce in the future. Chelsea were forced to pay Leeds £4.5 million in compensation for Michael Woods and Tom Taiwo in 2006 and neither player has developed to what Chelsea had expected.

There is a need to bring through home grown players because of the quota system in place in Premier League and Uefa competitions but the club also need to generate players from their academy to help lower their wage bill and transfer expenditure. What they are looking for is a new man to see that process through. Rowley will be very difficult to prise from Arsenal, but Chelsea are determined to get the very best.

Every player is said to have his price. But Lionel Messi is so good he’s the exception to the rule. I wouldn’t have a clue how much he’d be worth in today’s market, it is impossible to evaluate in monetary terms.

You wouldn’t just be buying a footballer, more an institution. He’s not only got a value as a player who has scored 40 goals already this season and probably created the same number again. He’s also got a value to Barcelona in terms of profile, merchandising and a symbol of the entire club.

I’ve heard £100million mentioned but that would be a snip. If you offered it, you wouldn’t get him. Think about it, 40 goals by February. The statistics are mind-boggling. As long as the club is running, Barcelona will want to keep him.

As you can probably tell, I’m as excited by everyone else at the prospect of Arsenal- Barcelona this week. It’s always a privilege to welcome someone like Messi to England.

He’s the best player in the world and it won’t be lost on Arsene Wenger that Messi’s closest challengers — Xavi and Andres Iniesta — also play for Barca. Their 5-0 win against Real Madrid has to rank as the best club performance I’ve ever seen.

What I like particularly about him is how he manages to carry a huge air of confidence without being arrogant. You always sense he appreciates what he’s doing; he enjoys putting a smile on people’s faces and he has done that for millions of people.

Messi was just a teenager when I first saw him live, playing for Barcelona at Chelsea in 2006, the year they won the Champions League. He stood out to me immediately because he was 18, in a Champions League semi-final and didn’t have a trace of fear in him.

Arsenal have been hugely unlucky in drawing Barcelona, it was the worst draw they could have got. Inter Milan showed last year you can beat them over two legs as it’s not guaranteed that the best team with the best players will win.

But it must be difficult to stop them playing, every one of them is good in possession and the movement is fantastic. It can be done but you need a great deal of resolve. Arsene Wenger won’t change his philosophy of playing, but he might alter his formation.

The truth is that nobody plays the Barcelona way better than they do. So if you take them on at their own game, they win. It is the contrasting team that might cause them problems, as Inter did last year.

It may be that the power of Chelsea or Manchester United might cause Barcelona more problems than Arsenal and I’d like to see what Tony Pulis would come up with if Stoke played Barcelona — and how Barca would cope with that.

I’ll be interested to see how Jack Wilshere does in such exalted company after his impressive performance for England against Denmark. Fabio Capello used him as a holding midfield player, which isn’t his best position, but that doesn’t mean his long-term England future is there.

It was a nice way of getting him involved in international football in a position where he would get a bit more time and space on the ball.

He wasn’t in the firing line further up the pitch and as an experiment it served its purpose as it allowed him to get a feel for what it’s like to play for England at the right pace. Wenger doesn’t use him like that.

Long-term, Wilshere will be best served in a rotating midfield — there is no need to tie him down as a holding midfielder. Arsenal can use Alex Song or Abou Diaby in that role and let Wilshere and Fabregas play.

Nothing fazes Wilshere and coming up against Barcelona will be a terrific education. He will face three guys of similar physical stature to himself — Messi, Xavi and Iniesta — and it will emphasise again that you don’t have to be 6ft 4in and built like Arnold Schwarzenegger to flourish in the modern game.

It’s going to be a fantastic night’s entertainment. We may as well all enjoy Messi. He’s priceless.
