Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has revealed that confidence is growing Old Trafford and that the Red Devils could match Arsenal’s feat of going an entire season unbeaten.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have yet to lose in the Premier League this season winning nine games and drawing seven in a solid, but unspectacular ascent to the top of the table.

Smalling, who rejected the chance to join the Gunners in favour of moving to Manchester, now believes that he and his teammates have the quality to keep the run going and could match Arsene Wenger’s class of 2004.

Reflecting on the first half of the season, the former Fulham centre-back told The Sun:

"We're trying not to mention it. We're happy that we're going quietly and staying unbeaten.

"So many teams have lost points already this season that it would be tough to keep it going as Arsenal did. I'm not sure we'll ever see that again.

"But we are the only ones who can do it this season, so who knows?

"If we can get through Christmas still unbeaten, it will be a good sign.

"We haven't really hit top form - except maybe against Blackburn - so it's time to send out a bit of a message.

"We take pride in the fact we are unbeaten.

"In the last 10 or 15 minutes of games, we put in that bit extra to make sure the run keeps going. We are getting stronger."

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, speaking to the club's official website, has spoken of the accident that broke both his arms.

Despite the seriousness of the injury, the Pole has said that he never doubted that he would make a full recovery, and subsequently play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

It took four months for him to recover from the injury, Szczesny said: "I was in the gym doing squats when I lost my balance and the weight fell on my hands and broke both of them.

"It was a little bit bizarre.

"There was actually a few people in the gym at the same time and they said they were about to laugh before they realised my arms were not quite straight.

"It was very tough, probably the toughest it has ever been for me.

"For four months I was not able to play football and it affected my whole life. I couldn't do all the things that normal people do.

"I was very down at some points but I never had any doubts that I was going to recover from it.

"The belief that I was going to recover and be a good goalkeeper kept me going."

The French coach is not known for big spending, preferring to invest in youth. But a trophy drought that stretches back to May 2005 means that he has come in for some criticism as a result of his reluctance to land big-name players.

Wenger, though, believes his way of doing things is better than that of some of his rivals, who he has accused of not respecting ''financial fair play.''

In an interview with Al Jazeera TV, he said: ''We respect our budget. You look at clubs who lose £100 million or £150 million and if we do that, then we go bust. It's as simple as that. We pay what we can afford.

''I'm amazed that people are amazed that we do that. I think what is surprising is that people don't respect that.

''The beauty of the competition and this club is to be successful while respecting the financial balance.

''People will maybe realise one day that it's not as easy to stay at the top and as well to cope with financial compulsories that you have at the top.

''We face rivals who do not respect the financial fair play. Instead of us being accused, maybe people should look somewhere else.''

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Gunners can battle their way past Barcelona when the two face each other in the Last 16 of the Champions League.

The Frenchman explained how his players will not be after any sort of revenge when they play the Spanish giants as he added how the situation is looking positive especially now that midfielder Abou Diaby is back in training, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie have more minutes on the pitch and defender Thomas Vermaelen is set to make his long-awaited comeback next month.

Asked about the title race, the Arsenal boss said that it is a very open race with the Gunners in a strong position having already played against big teams such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Wenger concluded by saying how it is now time for his players to learn from the mistakes they made during the first part of the season so as to improve their game and be more confident in the second part of the campaign.
