Chelsea, Man Utd, Spurs all make Giovani offers

Chelsea face competition from Manchester United and Tottenham for Barcelona whizkid Giovani dos Santos.

All three have 'made firm, substantial offers' for the 18-year-old Mexican, with Spurs hoping to steal a march by capitalising on Juande Ramos' contacts at Barcelona, says the Daily Mail.

Attacking midfielder Giovani, who has a £20million release clause but would initially cost around £10m, has been eager to stay at the Camp Nou but realises his opportunities are restricted.

England boss Fabio Capello was full of praise for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney after his performance in yesterday's FA Cup victory at Aston Villa.

"It was good to be at a game where a lot of the players were English players," said Capello.

"And of course to see a player like Wayne Rooney come on as a substitute in such good form and have a major impact on the game was good for me on my first day."

Manchester United have been contacted about the availability of Rangers fullback Alan Hutton.

The Observer says Hutton rejected a move to Tottenham last week after being left disappointed by their contract offer.

The player's camp is understood to have been unimpressed by the financial terms and to have sounded out Manchester United before rejecting the offer. United have scouted Hutton extensively this season, but told the player that they would not be moving in the window.

Sir Alex Ferguson has made Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov his No 1 transfer target and the Manchester United manager is determined to beat off competition from Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City.

But although Ferguson knows he may have to go close to the British transfer record of £31 million to land the Bulgarian international, he is adamant that he will not inflate the transfer market to absurd levels to accommodate Tottenham's demands.

Once Ferguson sets his stall out to go for Berbatov, there is only one likely outcome, even if he has to wait until the summer.

The Scot has a reputation for getting his man, in recent years landing players such as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Owen Hargreaves and Carlos Tevez.

The arrival of the supremely talented Berbatov would strengthen an already powerful dressing room, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Louis Saha and the Bulgarian making a fearsome set of strikers, ready to challenge for the Champions League.
