Becks relishing return

He's been away from Old Trafford for nearly seven years, but David Beckham finally feels the time is right to make a return.

It was the summer of 2003 when the midfielder bid farewell to Manchester and headed for Madrid. The wrench of having to leave the team he had supported from childhood was, Beckham says, ‘the toughest thing I’ve ever had to deal with in my career,’ but there are no hard feelings towards the club he wishes he was still part of.

While the 34-year-old admits to having felt physically sick in the past at the prospect of running out at Old Trafford in anything but the red shirt, he insists the timing of his first visit to Manchester as an opposition player now feels right, and he’s looking forward to his return with AC Milan next month for the second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie.

“The first few years away [from United] were hard and there were a lot of things I missed,” he revealed in an exclusive interview with Inside United.

“When I was at Real Madrid it just never felt right to come back to Old Trafford; the thought of playing against United always gave me that sick feeling because I just missed the club so much. But when the draw was made it just felt like it was the right time to go back.”

Not only is Beckham looking forward to catching up with some old friends when he’s in Manchester, he’s relishing the chance to be a part of a potentially great tie.

“I’ve spoken to Gary [Neville] a few times since the draw and we both believe the games will be two big occasions at the San Siro and Old Trafford,” he said.

“There isn’t one player I’m particularly looking forward to facing, I’m just looking forward to being a part of it all and savouring the atmosphere in both games. But, of course, returning to Old Trafford is going to be special and a very emotional night.

“I always wish I was part of Manchester United, it’s just in me,” he added. “Even though I’m not there any more, I’m still a huge fan and watch every game I can. I always want them to do well and be successful because the club still means so much to me.”

Done to join "Red Knights" consortium

Manchester-based bookmaker Fred Done is reported to be one of several North West businessmen interested in making a bid for Manchester United.

Done – whose fortune along with his brother Peter is estimated at £510m - is said to have been approached by a broker looking to put together by Seymour Pierce chairman Keith Harris, dubbed the “Red Knights”, to buy the club.

Done's Betfred betting empire was the club's official betting partner until the start of this season, but he has become disillusioned at the way the Glazer family runs the club.

Last month he told Crain's he would not subscribe to the family's £500m bond issue. “As an investment, I would not touch it with a barge pole,” he said.

“I am seeing empty corporate boxes, I am seeing empty seats and there are tickets on open sale which you did not see a year ago. I am seeing cracks in the team. It's just debt ridden. As a supporter it saddens me.

“I would like to know how much equity the Glazers have put in the club. I do not think it's very much.”

Reports claim the price tag on the club would be well over £1bn. However, the Glazer family have repeatedly said the club is not for sale.

Hargreaves Back For Milan?

Sir Alex Ferguson has today suggested that Owen Hargreaves could be back in time to face AC Milan.

“I would like to see him make the squad for the Champions League fixtures against AC Milan,” said Ferguson. “But we won’t rush him. We are being patient. Owen is alternating his training with the reserve and first-team squads, working for two days and then resting a day. It’s a matter of him regaining his confidence and when he is able to train every day that will be the moment for him to return to match play.”

But then, Hargreaves was included in the Champions League group stage squad which was selected at the very beginning of September, so I’ll believe it when I see it!
