Manchester City Football Club is an English Premier League football club who play at the City of Manchester Stadium.

The first known competitive fixture was played in November 1880, when the side was known as St. Mark's (West Gorton), they then became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 before changing their name to Manchester City Football Club in 1894. The club's most successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, the FA Cup, the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison and with players including Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee.

Since winning the League Cup in 1976, the club has failed to win any major honours. The club's decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990s, spending the 1998–99 season in the third tier of English football. The club has since regained top flight status, the level at which they have spent the majority of their history.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini confirmed that Craig Bellamy will not be considered for the FA Cup fifth round tie against Stoke, or the Premier League encounter against the same opposition on Tuesday.

However, he does expect the Welshman to have shrugged off a knee complaint in time to face former club Liverpool at Eastlands in a match that is crucial to the top four battle next Sunday.

"Craig will train on Monday and I hope he will be ready for Liverpool," said Mancini.

Vincent Kompany is also set to miss out on Saturday with a groin injury, but Kolo Toure should be available despite limping out of the win over Bolton on Tuesday with a knee problem.

Even if he doesn't play against Stoke, Kompany is happy with his new central defensive role despite having come to the club as a midfielder.

"If I stay in the team as a central defender then that is good," said the big Belgian.

"I am a proper centre half as much as I am a proper midfielder - it really doesn't make a difference to me.

"Hopefully if the manager sees me as a long-term central defender then I can grow to be a top, top player in that position."

Stoke boss Tony Pulis, meanwhile, reckons fans should be in for a decent spectacle with neither side wanting a replay.

“I am looking to pick a positive team and go there to have a right go,” he said.

“It is very important we go there and be positive and the team I pick is not overawed by the occasion or the players they are playing against.

“I think we have gone to one or two grounds and been a little bit in awe still this year.

“But our away performances have been a lot better than last year and the only way to break the taboo is by winning.

“I’m sure the last thing Roberto Mancini wants - and we all want - is a draw so it’s ’gloves off’ because I think both sides will want a result one way or the other.”

He added: “It’s going to be very difficult for us in a game against one of the richest clubs in the world,” he said.

“But Manchester City have spent an absolute fortune on players and they will be expecting a return for that investment.

“They’ve got two chances to do that by winning the cup or qualifying for the Champions League so there is that pressure on them, whereas we’re the underdogs and we’re looking forward to it.”

Captain Abdoulaye Faye has missed the last two matches with a back problem but may be ready to return.

Pulis said one or two other unnamed players had minor knocks which would all need to be assessed prior to the evening kick-off at Eastlands.

Ricardo Fuller, a second-half substitute in the 1-1 midweek Barclays Premier League draw at Wigan after being arrested over allegations of a nightclub assault, could return to the starting line-up at the expense of Tuncay Sanli.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini expects Wayne Bridge to answer England's World Cup call.

With Ashley Cole ruled out for three months after breaking his ankle at Everton on Wednesday, Bridge is now first in line to replace the Chelsea left-back in next month's friendly with Egypt and possibly the World Cup itself, if Cole's recovery does not go as planned.

That has raised inevitable questions about Bridge's ability to play alongside deposed captain John Terry, given the recent furore over the pair's private lives. However, Mancini does not see a problem.

"He never told me that he wouldn't play for England," said the Italian.

"The national team is important. I have not spoken to him but I think, if he is picked, he will play."

It already seems clear from Fabio Capello’s actions that the England coach is not likely to plead with Bridge for him to turn up ahead of the Egypt game on March 3, the final warm-up before a provisional squad is named in May.

While Mancini has obviously spent time with the former Chelsea player and is able to assess his mood, the City boss is equally nonplussed as to why Bridge might consider turning his country down.

“He is committed to playing for England,” stressed Mancini.

“It is important for any player to play at the World Cup. It is important for their career, especially if they can play in the first XI.”

Of more immediate importance to Mancini is the fact Bridge is only two matches into his recovery from a knee injury sustained against his old club in December.

“Wayne is a good man,” said Mancini.

“But he has only just recovered and it still maybe at around 60%.”
