Highbury, the club's home from 1913 to 2006, was the backdrop for significant moments in football history. It was the venue for the first-ever live radio commentary, heard by BBC listeners in January 1927. Ten years later, sections of a game between Arsenal and its Reserve team were televised – another first. More poignantly, the famous old ground also hosted the Busby Babes' final game on English soil before the Munich Air Disaster in 1958.
Arsenal's move to North London in 1913 secured the club's survival and so much of its history is inextricably linked with Highbury. But by the turn of the century, Arsenal had outgrown its spiritual home and, in 2006, the club moved to Emirates Stadium where a new era is well underway.

An Arsenal clock famously graced Highbury for over 70 years. It was one of the many features of Highbury instigated by the great innovator Herbert Chapman, and the South Stand soon became known as The Clock End.
When the Club moved to Emirates Stadium, the original clock changed homes too and currently sits high up on the outside of the stadium, appropriately facing the Clock End Bridge as a symbolic reminder of Arsenal's time at Highbury.
And during the summer, as part of the Club's ongoing ‘Arsenalisation' process, a similar clock in size and appearance is to be positioned high at the south end of Emirates Stadium.
It is a reminder that Arsenal Football Club is not just about the past and present. It is very much a club for the future too.

[himg=Short-term tenures for Stewart Houston and Bruce Rioch followed George Graham’s departure but Arsenal were still in need of a long-term answer. This would be emphatically delivered in the form of a relatively unknown Frenchman who would change the Club forever.

Arsène Wenger arrived at Highbury in September 1996 after notable success at Monaco and a stint in charge of Japanese side Grampus Eight. He was the Club’s first boss from outside the UK.



Arsenal finished fourth that season but the new manager would officially announce his arrival in his first full campaign at the helm. At one stage in 1997/98 the Gunners trailed leaders Manchester United by 12 points. However, imperious form throughout the second half of the campaign saw Arsenal crowned Premier League champions with two games to spare. Within two weeks, the Gunners had added the FA Cup, securing the Double in Wenger’s first full season in charge. 

As well as transforming Arsenal on the pitch, the new manager set about revolutionising his players’ lives away from the pitch, implementing cutting-edge training regimes and dietary systems. The Frenchman was meticulous in his squad construction, adding the likes of Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit and Marc Overmars to a team already boasting Arsenal institutions like David Seaman, Tony Adams and Dennis Bergkamp.

In 2001/02, Arsène Wenger’s side would surge to a spectacular Double, finishing 12 points clear of Liverpool in the Premier League. They sealed the title with a win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, just days after dispatching Chelsea 2-0 in the FA Cup Final.



Despite lifting the FA Cup once more in 2002/03, back-to-back titles would again elude the Gunners. But they made up for that disappointment in the season that followed, completing an unbeaten title campaign and going on to eclipse Nottingham Forest's long-standing run of League games without defeat. Played 49, Won 36, Drawn 13, Lost None - that Arsenal side was truly 'Invincible'.

Wenger had conquered England but Europe still evaded him. A Quarter-Final defeat against Chelsea in 2004 was the closest Wenger’s Arsenal had come to the biggest prize in European football but that would all change in May 2006 when they went all the way to the Champions League Final in Paris.

Arsenal prides itself on conducting its affairs in a correct and proper manner. Known as the 'Bank of England club' in the 1930s because of its solid financial foundations, Arsenal has maintained its tradition of self-sustainability, seeking to survive on its natural financial resources. Doing things 'the Arsenal way' is just as evident in the more trivial aspects of running a club. Go into the Boardroom before a home game, for example, and you'll see flowers to match the colours of Arsenal's opponents that day.

That respect for opponents is echoed in Arsenal's respect for its local area. Arsenal in the Community, which offers sporting, social inclusion, educational and charitable projects, reaches out to those who need it. Although the club is steeped in history and tradition, it has always been at the vanguard of football's development.

The legendary Chapman himself was responsible for many of the innovations we now take for granted - he advocated the use of floodlights, electronic turnstiles, scoreboards and a PA system as well as proposing feeder clubs and European tours.
