Manchester United in fight to solve defensive crisis as Bayern Munich look to snatch top target Simon Kjaer

Manchester United face a battle to land defensive target Simon Kjaer from Palermo.

The Denmark international has been identified as a long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic, but the Barclays Premier League champions' injury crisis has intensified calls for signings in January.

However, Bayern Munich have emerged as the latest suitors for 20-year-old Kjaer. The Liverpool fan has also been linked to Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan after an impressive season in Serie A.

Kjaer is under contract until 2013, but has an £11million buyout clause and has spoken of a willingness to come to England.

United have started to look more seriously at him amid fears that Serbia defender is unlikely to stay at Old Trafford when his contract runs out in 2012.

Sir Alex Ferguson could do with 6ft 3in centre half now, given that they face Wolfsburg in the Champions League without 15 first-team players.

Defenders Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand and John O’Shea are expected to be out until the new year.

We'll play without pressure

With a Champions League Last 16 place already secured for the Reds, Sir Alex Ferguson says there is much less pressure on his injury-hit squad and the young players drafted in as cover.

United take on Wolfsburg in the Volkswagen Arena on Tuesday night with Group B’s top spot up for grabs, but Sir Alex says he cannot see a clear advantage in finishing first and so has turned his attentions to preserving his side for the busy Christmas league programme.

“Wolfsburg will be delighted that we have so many injuries because it’s a big game for them,” the boss in Germany on Monday. “My main concern is getting players back from injury. I have to look at the bigger picture and that means looking to Saturday [against Aston Villa] and future league games.”

It goes without saying that the United players will be doing their utmost to win in Germany, but the quality and unpredictably of this year’s European tournament means that finishing second is much less of a stumbling block than it might be in other years.

“We’ve qualified for the Last 16, and looking at the groups I’m not sure whether first or second really matters,” said the boss. “So that is a major boost to us. If we are second, I don’t know if it does matter.

“In one group you’ve potentially got AC Milan or Real Madrid, in another you’ve got Barcelona, Inter Milan and Rubin Kazan, another you have Fiorentina and Lyon, or Bordeaux, Bayern and Juventus. You get one of those teams and it doesn’t really matter. They’re all of a similar quality - very good teams.

“The only advantage you’re giving away by finishing second is playing the home game first in the knockout round.”

Worst United XI of the Decade
The team of the decade seems pretty impossible to argue with. This team however, could be a little tougher to pick.

Which players made you want to gouge your eyes out with a rusty spoon when you saw them on the team sheet? Who were the players that made you question Fergie's sanity? Who just wasn't United? What is the worst United XI of the decade?

GK: Roy Carroll - When the first thing that people remember about your United career is a wrongly disallowed goal conceded by fumbling a routine catch, you know you're not going to be remembered with any great fondness. Carroll wasn't an awful goal-keeper, but nor was he the kind that could pull out something special, he was also prone to making hideous and costly mistakes (Milan '05).

RB: Eric Djemba-Djemba - Not a right back, I know, although I think he did play a few games down the right at some stage. Quite simply a dreadful player, devoid of any noticeable footballing ability. Currently at Danish club Odense where he was reunited with Roy Carroll this year. God help them.

LB: Kieron Richardson - I'm not surprised that Richardson has made a career for himself in the top-flight, and I'm even less surprised that it's not at United. Had obvious ability and a great left foot, but he was a player that I just couldn't stand. Not only wasn't he good enough for United, but his attitude stank.

CB: Mikael Silvestre - All in all, we've been pretty blessed when it comes to defenders in the last ten years and Silvestre was a decent one. However, when it's come to our most shambolic defensive displays, the 'Half-wit' has invariably been involved. On his day he could be awesome, at other times he made you want to chew your own flesh in horror. Maybe his inclusion is a tad harsh, but in my eyes, Mickey was the worst of a good bunch.

CB: Gabriel Heinze - A handy reminder never to take an Argentine red to your heart - As well as his often shocking displays in 06/07, Heinze merits his inclusion in this team on the basis that he's a cunt. Outstanding in his first season, injured for virtually all of his second and then decided that he'd rather play for Rafa after his third - you only get burned in the end.

RM: Liam Miller - More like Roy Crocker from Corrie than Roy Keane: tentative, stuttering and completely overawed by all around him. Possibly the most inconspicuous presence in United shirt in recent times. Currently plying his trade in the IRN-BRU & Wotsit league with Hibs.

CM: Kleberson - Football's greatest imposter since Ali Dia: a year after somehow becoming a regular in a Brazilian World Cup winning team, teeny-bopper magnet, Kleberson found himself in a red shirt. Many United fans had waited a long time for a Brazilian star to grace their team, after seeing this guy assualt their senses for two years, they knew they'd have to wait a bit longer.

CM: Alan Smith - It's not an easy decision to put Smudge in this team, and it has nothing to do with his Leeds connections. However, he is associated with perhaps the most unconvincing midfield ensemble in recent times. Drafted in at centre-mid after Keane's departure, Smith presided over United's engine room throughout our most depressing European campaign in recent memory.

CF: David Bellion - An abomination of a footballer! The fact that he's been reasonably successful at Bordeaux suggests that either Laurent Blanc is a genius and has to be a shoe-in for Fergie's job when the time comes, or that the French league is actually a crock of shit. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

CF: Dong Fanzhou - Enough said.

Eu,ca sa fac un comentariu,pot sa zic ca sunt surprins un pic de acest 11.Richardson chiar mi-a placut la un moment dat si aveam marea incredere si speranta ca va ajunge un fotbalist de top,dar ceva nu a mers cum trebuie si s-a stins.
Bellion nu s-a acomodat in campionatul englez,pt ca dupa ce a plecat la Bordeaux ajunsese golgheterul campionatului francez,un caz similar ca a lui Forlan in Spania.
Fangzou nici nu cred ca merita sa fie mentionat aici,deoarece a fost clar rolul lui la United,cel de money-maker pe piata chineza,a avut una sau doua aparitii in tricoul lui United.
