Carlo Ancelotti has admitted his position as Chelsea manager is still in doubt after a disappointing second season.As speculation rages about the Italian's future, we look at the arguments for and against a change of manager at Stamford Bridge.

The case for Ancelotti

1- One bad season doesn't make him a bad coach

This time last year, Chelsea won the double. Second place in the Premier League and a Champions League quarter-final is no disaster. Ancelotti is still an excellent manager - so why should Roman Abramovich pull the trigger?

2- Chelsea need stability

Since the start of the 2007/08 season, Chelsea have had five managers in four years. This period of instability has not only undermined the team - it also hampers the club's chances of landing top coaches in future.

3- It's not his fault - he's been undermined

Chelsea lost the Premier League because of an atrocious run of one win in nine games immediately following the dismissal of Ancelotti's assistant Ray Wilkins - a decision the Italian reportedly had nothing to do with.

The case against Ancelotti

1- He has not got the best out of Fernando Torres

Whoever had the idea to sign Torres, Ancelotti's failure to coax more than one goal in 17 games out of the £50m man is damning. If anything, Torres's arrival has diminished the team - Chelsea need a boss who can get the best out of him.

2- He has failed in Europe

Roman Abramovich's big ambition is to win the Champions League and another quarter-final exit simply will not do for the Russian. Ancelotti was hired for his European pedigree, so where is the silverware?

3- Chelsea are on the slide

Despite the expensive acquisitions of Torres and David Luiz, Chelsea have an ageing squad dominated by 30-somethings like of Terry, Lampard and Drogba. Ancelotti has not done enough to usher in a new breed of players.
