Ночью стало известно, что лондонский футбольный клуб «Арсенал организовал среди болельщиков конкурс на лучшую песню в честь российского нападающего Андрея Аршавина. Победителю достанется DVD-диск с лучшими моментами матчей сезона 2008/2009.

На официальном сайте клуба отмечается, что эта неделя посвящена Аршавину. «Наступило время состязания. У нас есть один диск с обзором сезона 2008/2009 для человека, который пришлет лучшую песню в честь Аршавина! Вы уже присылали прекрасные песни для Самира Насри и Мануэля Альмуния в течение прошлых двух недель. Теперь настало время придумать что-то для нашей новой звезды из России. Заполните соответствующую форму стихами песни и, возможно, добавьте мелодию для вашей песни. В пятницу мы опубликуем подборку из самых удачных творений и объявим имя победителя. Удачи!»

Отметим, что Андрей Аршавин занял второе место по результатам голосования среди болельщиков клуба, определявших лучшего игрока сезона. За российского спортсмена отдали свои голоса 19,4% фанатов лондонского клуба. Что очень даже неплохо.

Форвард "Арсенала" Андрей Аршавин в интервью Sky Sports заявил, что команде не хватает физически мощных игроков. По мнению россиянина, именно этим фактом обусловлены неудачи "канониров" в матчах с прямыми конкурентами.

"Мы не слишком удачно действуем при стандартных положениях, так как у нас слишком мало высокорослых футболистов. У многих команд есть преимущество над нами в этом компоненте, - сказал Аршавин. - "Арсенал" уступил всем прямым конкурентам, что означает, что в команде что-то не так. Соперники превосходят нас в физической мощи, поэтому нам необходимы высокорослые игроки.

Скажем, форвард, который мог бы цепляться за мячи. Судите сами, "Арсенал" ни в чем не уступал топ-командам по игре, но этого оказывалось недостаточно. Сеск Фабрегас отдал дань уважения Вику Акерсу, бывшему тренеру женской команды «Арсенала», который в этот Новый год был награжден Орденом Британской империи.


Акерс, продолжающий работу в нашем клубе в качестве менеджера по экипировке, летом прошлого года завершил работу в женской команде «Арсенала», завоевав в общей сложности 32 трофея за 22 года.

В начале месяца его вклад в развитие женского футбола получил официальное признание, и Фабрегас уверен: Акерс действительно достоин Ордена Британской империи.

«Я слышал отличные новости о том, что на прошлой неделе Вик Акерс представлен к королевской награде, и думаю, что это великолепно», - сказал Фабрегас.

«Это очень хороший человек. Я знаю его уже семь лет, и он всегда относился ко мне, как к сыну. Он к каждому относится с особым уважением, и все его за это любят».

«У него всегда есть что сказать, когда что-то идет не так. Иногда ему даже не нужно ничего говорить – достаточно его присутствия и прикосновения».

«Он оказывает нам большую помощь, и действительно заслуживает этой награды за то, что сделал здесь за многие годы, за то, что сделал для женской команды, и за то, какой он человек. Поздравляю его».

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has denied reports that Arsenal are tracking striker Mauro Zarate.

The Argentine striker's future with the club has been questioned over the last week, as the player's agent and brother said that the Biancocelesti would have to choose between Zarate and coach Davide Ballardini. There have also been suggestions that the Gunners were preparing a €40 million bid for the player.

However, the Lazio official has categorically denied that the former Velez Sarsfield hitman will leave during the winter transfer window.

"There is nothing happening with Zarate," he told Il Corriere dello Sport on Tuesday.

"It's just a rumour. There is no truth to it. Lazio rely on Zarate because he is a great champion."

Zarate has often appeared frustrated for the club this season, failing to replicate the successful campaign he had in 2008-09. The Argentine has only managed two goals in 17 appearances.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has vowed to hang on to all of his club's major talents this January.

Many of the club's stars have signed new deals in the last year committing their futures to the Gunners.

The Frenchman claims that he has worked hard to shape this group of players into a squad that can enjoy meaningful success and he will not allow it to be disrupted.

"Recently we have signed Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky to new contracts and that is 15 players we have re-signed this season. Now what I want to achieve is to keep these players," he said, according to Press Association Sport.

"We have worked very hard with them together.

"We have given them a chance at a big club and this is the way to see our policy through.

"We want to keep them together because we have seen when players have left before and we do not want to be destabilised again."

Wenger also hinted that he may also add players to his squad whilst the transfer window is open.

Former Gunner Sol Campbell is expected to re-join the club soon, and will reportedly play for the club's reserve side at West Ham United on Tuesday evening.

"We are open to new players coming in, and in every position," Wenger added.

"It is a bit like being a fisherman - you try here, you try there.

"You have a list in your head of priorities: one, two, three, four - and you always try to get number one."

The list is unashamedly discursive, but does operate under the assumption that winning teams deserve recognition. It's also true that, the bigger the stage, the higher the rewards - yet at the same time clubs who beat all put in front of them will have a day in the sun as a result.

Here are the top ten club sides across the world over the past month as judged by Goal.com's Ewan Macdonald...

10. Real Madrid (Spain)

That Real Madrid oust rivals Barcelona from the list may have something to do with the fact that, unlike Barca, they didn't suffer a Copa del Rey defeat. (They're already out.) But it's been a fine month for the Blancos - despite a draw with Osasuna, Madrid have thrashed Zaragoza, edged Valencia, and beat Mallorca with ease. Still not top yet, though...

9. Sydney FC (Australia)

The Australian season is drawing to a close, and Sydney stand on the verge of ending the regular season in pole position. That's because of a watertight defence that's gone the whole month without conceding.



8. Al-Qadsia (Kuwait)

A fine start to the Kuwaiti season for the Royals, who are defending their championship. Forward ace Khalaf Salama has had a particularly fine time of it.

7. Atletico Madrid (Spain)

Their record in the Liga of late is comparable to that of Barcelona and the aforementioned Blancos, but the fact that Atleti have had to leap up from depths unimaginable makes their run somewhat more commendable. The Rojiblancos are finally starting to look like a team again under Quique Sanchez Flores, a 4-0 win over Valladolid paying testament to that.



6. Cotonsport (Cameroon)

A full seven points clear at the top of the league, Cotonsport just can't stop winning, their latest triumph coming in the form of a 5-2 win over Fovu. The perfect way to open the mid-season break for the Garoua outfit.

5. Rangers (Scotland)

All financial troubles aside, it's been a very merry Christmas at Ibrox. A 1-1 draw at Celtic Park in the Old Firm derby saw the Gers maintain their lead at the top of the SPL; wins over Motherwell, Hibernian and Dundee United brought 17 goals between them.

4. Manchester City (England)

The Blues are now in the Champions League zone after enjoying a new lease of life under recently-installed coach Roberto Mancini. More importantly, they have a real scoring touch at the City of Manchester Stadium, as shown by the 4-1 win over Blackburn. Look out for another Carlos Tevez surge...

3. Panathinaikos (Greece)

Another fine month for the boys in Green, who have barely skipped a beat since replacing Henk Ten Cate with Nikos Nioplias in the manager's office. With just over half the Greek games played, they're five points clear at the top, and looking good in the Europa League to boot.



2. Napoli (Italy)

Since installing Walter Mazzarri as coach, the Neapolitans have been a revelation, rising up to the Champions league positions apace. An unbeaten month, complete with a fantastic performance against Sampdoria, means they're true European contenders.

1. Arsenal (England)

Detractors will point to their recent draw with Everton, but the fact remains that Arsenal have turned the Premier League into a three-horse race. The Gunners haven't failed to score in the last month and are beginning to look comfortable on their travels, too. Just ask Liverpool...
