Manchester United: Red Devils sign lucrative new deal

Manchester United, the English soccer champions, have continued their rise to commercial dominance in Asia with a new partnership.

The club has teamed up with Billionaire Sports Pvt Ltd (BSPL) to open the first ever Manchester United Restaurant and Bar in India. It will include giant screens to show projections of all United’s games, and will be managed by Manchester United Food & Beverage (Asia). Club merchandise will also be sold from the outlet.

“India is one of the few markets in the world which offers enormous potential and we believe them to be immense for Manchester United,“ said Andy Yun, chief executive officer of MUFB Asia. “A Manchester United Restaurant and Bar customer is usually a customer for life, we are certain we will have many such lifelong friends in India soon. Our goal is to establish Manchester United Restaurant and Bar as a leading operator and franchisor of casual dining restaurant and bar in the Asia Pacific Region.“

BSPL director Sachin Kohli said: “We are very excited to bring the biggest sports brand in the world to India in a unique experience. This would be the ideal combination of dining, partying and sports events. We will also be bringing all the much awaited Manchester United merchandise to the country for the first time.“

The project was launched by Total Sports Asia (TSA), the continent’s leading sports marketing firm. Suvrangsu Mukherjee, managing director of TSA India, added: “This is part of another endeavor from TSA to work with top notch brands and let them permeate spaces beyond their natural sports existence. With over 20 million Manchester United fans in India and an increasing café going culture among the youth, the timing for the launch of Manchester United Restaurants and Cafes is perfect. We are sure that these outlets will help bring the brand closer to consumers apart from offering world class cuisine and a stadium like atmosphere during the screening of matches.“

Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves to make September injury return, reveals Sir Alex

The England star has not featured since the start of last season following two operations to cure a tendinitis problem which has plagued him since before his move

He was was ruled out of the current Far East tour as he continues his rehabilitation, although it seems Hargreaves will join up with his team-mates when they head to Munich for the Audi Cup at the end of the month.

'I think we are looking at the end of September depending on how he reacts,' said Ferguson.

'We are happy with his rehabilitation so far and while he won't be ready to play in Munich, he will be able to train.'

Hargreaves will be joined in Germany by Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia, who have also missed the trip to Malaysia, South Korea and China.

Vidic has not fully recovered from an ankle injury he picked up on international duty with Serbia last month. Meanwhile Valencia has been unable to take part in many of United's early training sessions because he needed to go back to Ecuador to gain a UK visa.

'It gets frustrating but that is the system and you have to accept it,' said Ferguson.

'His fitness levels weren't high enough for him to be considered for the tour.'

Ferguson also confirmed another new-boy, Gabriel Oberton, will miss the first three months of the season with an injury which was already known about when he signed from Bordeaux.

Man Utd ahead of Real Madrid with stunning commercial deals

Manchester United are ahead of European rivals Real Madrid in their commercial plans - despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo over the summer.

The Telegraph says United are preparing to bank more than £80 million from commercial deals during the 2009-10 season.

Led by the club's London-based operation, headed by commercial director Richard Arnold, United have stolen a march on their Premier League and European rivals by securing a series of lucrative sponsorship deals, partnerships and territory-specific agreements that will bring the club huge sums from 14 commercial partners next season. The club are expected to bank in the region of an extra £23.5 million on last season.

Research carried out by the club suggests they have 80 million supporters in Asia alone, so from Saudi Arabia to Vietnam, South Korea and Indonesia, United are making the most of their status in the region.

The Far East tour, on which United will play in Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea and China, will generate £6 million for the club.

Kumho Tyres and Hi Seoul (Korea), Aigo (China) and 3 Indonesia will all be rewarded for their investment with United bringing their own particular brand of corporate stardust in the coming 10 days. A £2 million tour sponsorship deal with Telekom Malaysia is a handsome return for just two days in Kuala Lumpur.
