Manchester United Could Still Sign More Players – CEO David Gill

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has not closed the door on more summer signings arriving at Old Trafford.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson had previously stated he was not planning on bringing any more players to the club before the transfer window closes at the start of September.

But Gill, who flies out to the Far East with United today on their pre-season friendly tour, has suggested there could still be some transfer activity in the offing.

"I will start each day with the usual emails and correspondence and I'm sure there will be some player activity going on while we are over there," he said, according to The Daily Mirror.

After the record-breaking sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, the Red Devils have secured the services of midfielders Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan, from Wigan Athletic and Bordeaux respectively, as well as Michael Owen, whose contract at Newcastle United had expired.

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland international midfielder Darron Gibson has signed a three-year contract extension at Old Trafford. The 21-year-old, who has broken into the first-team squad and made a handful of appearances last season, is now tied to the club until 2012.

Manchester United 9-2 to buy Aston Villa strike Ashley Young

Why have Aston Villa spent £12million on left-winger Stewart Downing when they have Ashley Young in the same position?

Downing can't hold a candle to Young, although at the pace he moves it's a fair bet it would still be lit should he ever try.

What team other than Manchester City value an attacker who scored zero goals last season at £12m? The word is he has been brought in to pave the way for Young to go to Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson says his summer spending is over but Paddy Power think he's telling porkies - not the first Irishmen to question the Scot's word - and make United as short as 9-2 to buy Young. Where will Young be on Sept 1? 2-5 Villa, 9-2 Man United

Strong squad heads for Asia

Sir Alex Ferguson will have a strong squad at his disposal on Saturday, when he names the line-up for United's first Asia Tour match against Malaysian XI.

All bar two of the 22 players on board the flight from Manchester to Kuala Lumpur are full internationals, the exceptions being Brazilian left-back Fabio da Silva and Italian striker Federico Macheda.

New signing Michael Owen is in contention for his first appearance in a United shirt, having joined fellow strikers Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and young Macheda on the plane.

EXCLUSIVE: Ashley Young Prefers Manchester United Over Chelsea

Chelsea's chances of landing Ashley Young have taken a body-blow, as Goal.com can exclusively reveal the Aston Villa star would prefer a move to their title rivals and reigning champions, Manchester United.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that with the signings of Luis Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen and Gabriel Obertan that his summer shopping was at an end due to the inflated value of many other players within the transfer market.

However, chief executive David Gill was quoted to the contrary, saying he expects further transfer activity while the Red Devils tour the Far East.

Young's future has been subject to speculation since Aston Villa stepped up their chase to land Stewart Downing, who is expected to sign from relegated Middlesbrough by the end of the week.

That speculation suggested that the Downing signing was mooted by Villa manager Martin O'Neill as a contingency plan so that if one of the big clubs made a move for Young, the Midlanders could afford to sell.

A reported £25 million price tag was put on the winger when Chelsea made an enquiry, driven as they are by new coach Carlo Ancelotti's desire to restrengthen, as well as John Terry's alleged behind the scenes battle-cry for big-name signings, after the club's failure to capture the likes of Kaka and David Villa.

However, if United were to enter into negotiations for the 24-year-old, Goal.com can confirm that the player would prefer a move to Old Trafford.

Nevertheless, Martin O'Neill's stance on Young's future remains one of resilience, and the Villa boss will fight to keep the No. 7, whom he signed from Watford in January 2007, for £8m (rising to £9.75m).

Vidic stays at home as United fly out

Nemanja Vidic was missing from the Manchester United squad that headed out to Malaysia for the first leg of a four-match Far East tour.

Although United have not given a reason for Vidic's absence, the defender was forced to pull out of a World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands last month after suffering an ankle injury in Serbia's victory over Austria.

With Wes Brown and Gary Neville included in a 22-man party, there was no point risking Vidic, although Sir Alex Ferguson will hope to have the former Spartak Moscow man ready for the start of United's Premier League title defence against Birmingham on August 16.

The only other familiar face to miss out was Brazilian full-back Rafael Da Silva, although he too was suffering with an ankle problem at the back end of last season.

Ferguson's three new signings, headed by Michael Owen, all boarded the plane bound for Kuala Lumpur, where United will tackle a Malaysia XI on Saturday.
