Ahead of his fourth Catalan derby, Barcelona left-back Frenchman Eric Abidal granted an interview with Catalan sports paper Sport detailing his experience both professionally and at a personal level. And through his words, it is evident that he is happy playing for the team; for what they have achieved and what they are going for in the future.

Here is the interview:

Leading the league, Champions League second round as group leader, contract renewal until 2012 and the birth of your third daughter; what more could you ask for before the year ends?
We still have Espanyol and the Club World Cup. But personally, I’m happy because the club is satisfied with my performance.

It can be assumed that you are a fixed starter under Guardiola, playing even when you’re not fully fit …
I do not know if I am a fixed starter, but every time I play, I try to do my best, and even if I’m not, I like to play my part in ensuring we always have harmonious dressing room atmosphere.

What changed in the three years that you have been with Barcelona?
On top of everything else, tactical issues; Now, before every match, everyone knows what to do, and over time, we accomplished a lot but (with this team) even at 30, I still have a lot of things to learn.

What about scoring a goal for Barca?
I’m not a goal-scorer, my job is to defend. It doesn’t come too often but when it does, I’ll go for it. If I can score and make a difference, I’ll do it, but working for the team has to come first.

If you could choose the perfect stage (to score your goal)…

No. Pep has a way of preparing for the matches, and will update the team. I’m sure he studies them all.

What if the team fails to win it? Will it be considered as a disaster?
For Barca, not winning is always a disaster. We are players who always want to win. We have yet to win this cup and we look forward to capturing it. Even if it is not a disaster, it would certainly be a disappointment.

During the Ballon d’Or gala, you did send a video message to Messi …
Yes, another small award for him (laughs).

Do you feel any healthy jealousy?
No, because now I can say I’ve played alongside the best player in the world. Before the season started, I told him, ‘The Ballon is yours’ and I’m glad. There is no player more important than him in the world. Now you don’t call him Leo Messi, you call him the Ballon d’Or.

Did you consider it as another award for the team?
No, he plays with his qualities and it is a merit for him. Until recently, he is almost perfect.
