Marco Melandri will compete in MotoGP this season after a deal was struck between Kawasaki and Dorna to enter a one-rider team. Although most eyes were set to be on whether Melandri would make a decision regarding his future during the upcoming pre-season test in Qatar, Kawasaki have confirmed that they compete in 2009 with the Italian rider. The short statement is as follows: Kawasaki announces that after constructive talks between Kawasaki, Dorna and other involved parties, a new one-rider Team will participate in the 2009 MotoGP Championship season. This decision was made after negotiations that followed Kawasaki's January 2009 announcement to suspend its factory supported MotoGP activities due to the economic crisis. Rider for the new MotoGP team will be the Italian Marco Melandri. The team will be equipped with Kawasaki motorcycles and supporting materials. That Kawasaki has come to this new team approach is the result of on the one hand the need for a strong reduction of MotoGP racing investments and on the other hand the necessity to come to constructive solutions for all related parties. The new team will disclose more details about its 2009 season's plans on a short notice. In addition, BBC viewers can watch MotoGP, 250cc and 125cc qualification, as well as 125cc and 250cc races, live on their 'red button' service. The MotoGP race, however, will be shown live by the BBC only, with British Eurosport televising it on a same-day delay. "We are delighted to be offering more than ever of the world's leading motorcycle series,” said Philip Bernie, BBC, Head of TV Sport Editorial. “Our coverage of MotoGP, the 250s and 125s means that BBC viewers will be able to get the most comprehensive view of this spectacular sport. Combined with our new F1 contract, this means the BBC is now showcasing fully the best motor sport on both two wheels and four wheels. “In order to complement the BBC's coverage, British Eurosport will also broadcast MotoGP extensively this year. The UK arm of Europe's popular digital sports network will air all practice and qualifying sessions live from the Friday and Saturday of each Grand Prix weekend, followed by live coverage of the 125cc and 250cc races on Sundays. The MotoGP races will also be available on the channel on a same-day-delayed basis. “Furthermore, the British Eurosport transmissions will be available as video on demand for seven days via the Eurosport Player at the Eurosport.yahoo.co.uk website." The announcement comes eight months after MotoGP commercial rights-holder Dorna Sports revealed it would switch the coverage from Eurosport to the BBC, stating: "Coverage of the MotoGP World Championships will no longer be available on Eurosport from the 2009 season," due to “Dorna's new strategy of working with national network broadcasters around Europe, always focusing first and foremost on free-to-air coverage to bring MotoGP to wider audiences.
